Why should I apply to be a Certified Preceptor (CP)?
Certification as a preceptor demonstrates your commitment to superior professionalism, upholding industry standards, and continued learning. These merits can help boost your professional credibility and prestige within your own network, with your colleagues, with patients, and when pursuing new work or role opportunities.
Once you become a Certified Preceptor (CP), you will receive your certification document stating that as a professional, you’ve been trained, educated, and are prepared to meet a specific set of criteria for the role of a preceptor. You will also be able to use the designated credential earned–CP–after your name to verify your legitimacy and competence as a certified preceptor.
What are the requirements for the application to be a Certified Preceptor (CP)?
All applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree, have at least two (2) years of experience as a preceptor, and have completed at least 25 continuing education contact hours/credits (CE/CME) in topics and content related to preceptoring within the last three (3) years.
Additional application requirements include answers to four (4) statements & questions about preceptoring, two (2) letters of recommendation, and a current résumé or curriculum vitae (CV).
Is it possible to print and mail my application?
No. Applications to become a Certified Preceptor (CP) are only accessible and submissible online on the Preceptor Training & Certification website; printed and mailed applications will not be accepted. It is recommended that candidates save their application information and documentation both on the website (via the Save button) and in another location as a backup in the event of technical errors/issues.
Once I have submitted my application to be a Certified Preceptor (CP), when will I receive a decision?
Applications are reviewed on a rolling (ongoing) basis and the review process may take up to 30 days. Applicants will be notified of decisions via email.
Can I check the status of my application?
No. There is no way to check the status of an application once it has been submitted.
Is it possible to withdraw my application once it has been submitted?
If an applicant wishes to withdraw their application once it has been submitted, a written request must be made to info@preceptortrainingprogram.com.
Application fees are non-refundable in the event of withdrawal.
What happens if I am not granted certification as a preceptor?
Applicants will be notified of decisions via email, including rationale explaining why certification was denied.
Applicants must wait six (6) months before being eligible to apply again.
Can I appeal the decision if my application to become (or renew status as) a Certified Preceptor (CP) is rejected?
Yes, a formal review and appeal process is available to all individuals. See the Certification and Recertification handbooks for further details and information.
Is there a limit to how many times I may apply to be a Certified Preceptor (CP)?
Yes. You may not apply more than three (3) times to become a Certified Preceptor (CP).
How much does the application to be a Certified Preceptor (CP) cost?
The application to become a Certified Preceptor (CP) is priced at $149.95.
For how long is my status as a Certified Preceptor (CP) valid?
Once your application has been submitted and approved, and you have successfully passed the Preceptor Certification Examination (required for initial application only), your status as a Certified Preceptor (CP) is valid for three (3) years.
What are the requirements to renew my status as a Certified Preceptor (CP)?
Six (6) months prior to your certification expiring, Certified Preceptors (CPs) will be able to renew their certification.
Renewal applicants must have completed at least 10 continuing education credits (CE/CME) in topics and content related to preceptoring, and at least 20 continuing education contact hours/credits (CE/CME) in topics and content related to leadership within the last three (3) years. Renewal applicants are not required to take or pass the certification exam again.
Additional renewal application requirements include answers to four (4) statements & questions about preceptoring during the previous three-year period as a Certified Preceptor (CP). Letters of recommendation and a current résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) are not required for renewal applications.
What happens if my status as a Certified Preceptor (CP) has expired?
If your certification has expired, you may still complete and submit the renewal application for up to six (6) months. There is a $60 Reactivation Fee for all renewal applications submitted after their three-year certification period.
After this six-month grace period, should you want to become a Certified Preceptor (CP), you must complete the initial application and all of its requirements again, including successfully passing the Preceptor Certification Examination.
How much does the application to renew my status as a Certified Preceptor (CP) cost?
The renewal application for current Certified Preceptors (CPs) is priced at $119.95.
If your certification has expired, you may still complete and submit the renewal application for up to six (6) months. There is a $60 Reactivation Fee for all renewal applications submitted after their three-year certification period.
Are refunds offered for the application?
No, all purchases are final. No refunds are offered for the application to become a Certified Preceptor (CP) or for the application to renew status as a Certified Preceptor (CP).
